A festive message for Solihull’s visually impaired
From The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Irene Chamberlain on 14 December 2011
The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Irene Chamberlain, recorded a special Christmas message for the borough’s visually impaired people last week.
Councillor Chamberlain and her Escort, Mr Robert Chamberlain, visited the Solihull Borough Talking Newspaper (SBTNA) to add their seasonal message to the latest edition of the paper.
The Mayor told the paper’s listeners about herself and some of the activities she has undertaken since taking the mayoral chains in May.
Councillor Chamberlain said: “One of the highlights of the year so far for both Robert and I has without doubt been the huge number of volunteers we have met who give such a great service to the community – just like the team behind the talking newspaper. They are all a credit to the community and to themselves.”
From the New Year, SBTNA plans to change from analogue to digital recording, giving them improved sound quality and meaning they will no longer be limited to 90 minutes per week.
The paper will therefore be sending out memory sticks instead of cassettes and will be providing their listeners with memory stick players, which the Mayor was shown during her visit.
The Mayor also met one of the four recording teams who record the local news from the Solihull News and the Solihull Observer every Friday night. There are then four teams of people who copy the tapes and put them in wallets and post them so that the listeners receive the newstape every Monday morning.
