Achieving 2020 'Zero Waste' conference and workshop

From Councillor Ian Courts, Cabinet member for Economic Devlopment & Regeneration on 12 June 2012

Solihull Council's Economic Development and Regeneration team is challenging businesses in the borough to eliminate waste, save money and help the environment with a ‘Zero Waste’ Conference and Workshop.

The conference will be held at the Crowne Plaze Hotel, NEC, on Friday 29 June, and will be hosted by the Solihull Sustainability Visioning Group in partnership with Climate Change Solutions.

Delegates will hear from industry experts and leading Solihull businesses on how to make the transition to a ‘Zero Waste’ economy.

Attendees will also benefit from a ‘Quick Wins’ Workshop which aims to help businesses identify new opportunities through the matching of resources, including waste, logistics, and expertise.

Councillor Ian Courts, Cabinet member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “I’m delighted to see this practical and innovative business led event taking place in Solihull.  Reducing waste is not only good for the environment but good for business too, and will be crucial to making the transition to a low carbon economy.

Chair of the Solihull Sustainability Visioning Group, Joe McNamara of Jaguar Land Rover, said: “We are extremely pleased to be working closely with Climate Change Solutions to bring this unique event to Solihull.  A new approach is required to achieve ‘Zero Waste’ which will mean designing and managing products and processes to avoid waste and conserve valuable resources.”

“We encourage local businesses throughout the borough to join us on June 29, to not only see how they can help the environment, but also to take advantage of the significant resource efficiencies, business opportunities and cost savings that can be achieved through a ‘Zero Waste’ commitment.”

The event is designed to help businesses to:

• Find out more about ‘Zero Waste’
• Save money on raw materials
• Turn waste materials into a resource
• Generate new business opportunities
• Reduce their carbon impact
• Improve their environmental performance
