Less than two weeks until our moment to shine

From Press office on 19 June 2012

Olympic fever is gripping Solihull, with less than two weeks until the Torch Relay comes to the borough.

Solihull’s moment to shine is on the morning of Sunday 1 July, when part of the Relay’s route takes it through the borough, including down Solihull High Street, where it is due to arrive at around 8.05am.

Solihull town centre will be an ideal place to line the streets and watch the Relay, and free parking will be available in all town centre car parks until 10am.

After the Relay has left the town centre, there will still be plenty to do and see – including a parade down the High Street.

Taking part in the parade will be a number of entertainers and community groups, including stilt walkers, a town crier, Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, various dance groups and Birmingham and Solihull Rugby Club among others.

As well as the parade, there will also be the chance to try out a new sport in Mell Square in the sport village, as well as table football, table tennis and a Community Games area.

There will be plenty of places opening early in the town centre offering breakfast and drinks, while some shops will also be opening earlier than they usually would on a Sunday.

BBC Radio WM will also be based in the town centre all morning, with presenter Joanne Malin broadcasting live from 7-10am.

Finally, the morning will be rounded off with this year’s Race for Life, which starts in Malvern Park at 11am and finishes in Mell Square.
