Investing in leisure

The recent termination of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract with Rivendell has provided Solihull Council with an opportunity to enhance its current leisure services and develop plans for future investments into the service.

A re-procurement process for managing the Council’s two leisure centres is currently in process.  Parkwood will continue to manage the leisure centres on behalf of the Council until the new successful contractor has been appointed.

The termination of the former Leisure PPP required a long series of negotiations with a variety of interested parties.  Now these have been completed, the early termination has resulted in savings of around £1 million per annum, as well as providing funds for the necessary ongoing maintenance.

These savings will help mitigate the Council’s financial pressures, by supporting the Council’s Medium Term Financial Strategy and will also be used for future investment to enhance leisure services.

Councillor Robert Hulland, Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources and Delivering Value, said:
“Early termination of the PPP contract with Rivendell was done to find more cost effective ways to deliver our leisure services in the borough.

“Following negotiations over the summer we are in a much better position and as well as meeting our budgetary responsibilities we can now begin looking at investing in the service.”

Councillor Tony Dicicco, Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and Partnerships, said:
“I would like to congratulate the Council’s officers for their sterling work in negotiating a fantastic outcome for the borough.

“I look forward to welcoming the next successful contractor, once the current procurement process is complete, and to working with officers on enhancing our leisure services with new innovations in the coming years.”
