The original Chelmsley Wood is thought to have been sited on Alcott Wood, which can be traced back to 1086. As a result there are some outstanding wildflower species which remain intact today. In 2002 the Wood was designated a Local Area Nature Reserve to protect the environment, for this reason. The area forms part of an important green network linking the Cole Valley and Project Kingfisher to Marston Green Park and the surrounding countryside.
