Planning Policy and Proposals
One of the main responsibilities of the Sustainable Development Team is forward planning – producing planning policies and proposals for Solihull.
Development Plan
Planning decisions (including planning applications), must be made in accordance with the development plan, unless there are very good reasons for doing otherwise.
Development plans have a fundamental role of balancing the pressure of development against the need to protect the environment.
The current development plan for Solihull is made up of two documents:
- The West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy which provides the regional planning framework for the West Midlands, and
- The Solihull Unitary Development Plan (UDP).
Detailed policy guidance on specific issues is called supplementary planning guidance and supplementary planning documents. These are available on the Development Control and Planning Applications page.
The Unitary Development Plan (UDP) covers the period from 1st April 2001-31st March 2011. We are now working on a Local Development Framework (LDF) which will replace the UDP.
The West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy is also being reviewed and this will need to be taken into account in developing the Local Development Framework.
Development Briefs
We produce briefs to encourage and guide the development of certain sites. A development brief is currently available for the former Powergen Site and adjoining land, Stratford Road, Shirley.

The Sustainable Development Team is also responsible fo landscape/ecology, sustainability including education for sustainable development (ESD) and local land charges.
