Executive Summary

Information about air quality in solihull

Executive Summary

Stage 3: An Assessment of Air Quality for 1999 and Onwards to 2005

The Council has completed a three-stage review and assessment of air quality in Solihull, looking at key pollutants. This has been done in close collaboration with other West Midlands Authorities. The review has identified the main local sources of air pollution and subjected these to detailed computer analysis to forecast present and future air quality standards. These forecasts have been compared with existing information from monitoring stations across the West Midlands.

The review concludes that air quality already meets Government objectives for these pollutants. It forecasts that existing trends and national policies will lead to Government objectives continuing to be met without the need for any further action.

Had this not been the case, the Council would have been legally obliged to declare parts of Solihull as "Air Quality Management Areas" (AQMA's), to carry out further review and assessment within these areas, and to develop local Action Plans.

There was a period of public consultation from 1st January 2001 to 15th February 2001.

Further reviews and assessments will be undertaken to monitor developments in air quality in the future.
