SISS - Sensory Team
The Sensory and Physically Impaired (SPI) Team works with parents and carers, schools (mainstream and Special) and settings to provide advice and support for children and young people who are hearing, visually, physically or multi-sensory impaired.
The Sensory and Physically Impaired (SPI) Team consists of the Team Manager (also the Lead Professional for Visual Impairment), the Assistant Team Manager (also Lead Professional for Hearing Impairment), an Educational Audiologist, Advisory Teachers for Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment, Physical Impairment and Multi-Sensory Impairment and three Inclusion Support Practitioners.
They liaise with other agencies, predominantly Health and Social Care, to ensure that there is a cohesive service provided for sensory and physically impaired children and young people from diagnosis through to the end of their school career. The aim is to provide a flexible support package determined by the individual needs of the child or young person with a sensory or physical impairment.
The SPI Team also includes a designated provision (Hearing Impaired Centre) for secondary aged hearing-impaired students based at Lyndon Secondary School. The Centre has qualified Teachers of the Deaf/Hearing Impaired and Inclusion Support Practitioners. Referral for places at the Centre is through the Specialist Inclusion Support Service.
Referral to the SPI Team is through the Specialist Inclusion Support Service referral form. Schools or settings, Health or Social Care professionals and other professional agencies can make referrals.
