Community and Education embrace sustainability at Arden School
Arden School was keen that the new building offered a bright modern and inspirational facility for students and the local community; this was achieved through the construction of fifteen new classrooms.
The classrooms will cater for a wide variety of vocational classes in design, technology, hair design, art and home economics. The school were keen to embrace the needs of the community when considering the design and to place the building at the heart of the community. The new facilities have increased the availability and space for night classes and room bookings. It is hoped these facilities will enhance the local community both socially and economically by providing skills and social settings for Knowle and Solihull residents.
As well as providing an excellent community facility, the team also wanted to create a sustainable building. To meet this objective the project stakeholders worked towards the achievement of a BREEAM rating of very good; which promotes excellence in design and sustainability. It covers a vast array of activities such as preventing pollution, improving local ecology, recycling, improving security, sharing facilities with the community, reducing pollution, grey water recycling and encouraging cycling and the use of public transport. It is a scheme which seeks to enhance the building, the wider school, environment and most importantly the experiences of the people who use the building.
