Community and Education embrace sustainability at Light Hall
Two years after the fire, a new state of the art teaching block was unveiled at Light Hall School in Shirley. The opening marked the end of the construction phase of the project but the start of an exciting new chapter for the students, teaching staff and the wider community.
The school was keen that the building offered a bright modern and inspirational facility for students and the local community; this was achieved through the construction of twenty new classrooms each with interactive whiteboards, a recording and drama studio and a modern learning centre. The school were keen to embrace the needs of the community when considering the design and to place the building at the heart of the community. The new facilities have increased the availability and space for night classes and room bookings. It is hoped these facilities will enhance the local community both socially and economically by providing skills and social settings for Shirley and Solihull residents.
As well as providing an excellent community facility, the team also wanted to create a sustainable building. To meet this objective the project stakeholders worked towards the achievement of a BREEAM rating of very good; which promotes excellence in design and sustainability. It covers a vast array of activities such as preventing pollution, improving local ecology, recycling, improving security, sharing facilities with the community, reducing pollution, grey water recycling and encouraging cycling and the use of public transport. It is a scheme which seeks to enhance the building, the wider school, environment and most importantly the experiences of the people who use the building.
