Skills for life

Skills for Life is about enabling everyone to have confidence in their everyday reading, writing and maths.

What is Skills for Life?

Skills for Life is about enabling everyone to have confidence in their everyday reading, writing and maths. It can:

  • Help you get on at work
  • Make you more independent
  • Give you confidence with filling in forms
  • Enable you to help your children with homework

Particular examples are:

  • Grammar, punctuation, spelling, handwriting, writing letters
  • Basic maths ( including handling money, banking)
  • Getting a job, or writing a CV
  • Life skills - how to look after yourself (personal health, hygiene, safety, simple cookery book, road safety, independent travel)

Learners who use computers to improve their reading, writing or use of numbers double the value of their study time and gain keyboarding and other computing skills.

Skills for Life in libraries

All Solihull libraries have ranges of "First Choice" and "Quick Reads" books by popular authors, for the particular enjoyment of new readers.

All library staff will help you find the right book, or can advise of local English and maths classes. Some courses are available in your local library.
