Proposed Road Safety Improvements Station Road / Poplar Road Solihull town centre
In January 2011 we asked for views on proposals to make some changes in Station Road and Poplar Road in Solihull town centre to improve road safety for all road users, in particular pedestrians.
The draft proposals consulted on are shown on the attached Plan.
Note, the deadline for responding to the consultation has now expired.
Outcome of the consultation
There is a high level of support for proposals to improve road safety in this part of the town centre. However concerns were raised by bus operators over plans to introduce an additional road hump in Station Road and steepening up of the existing ramps (proposals 1 and 2). There was also some concern over the proposals to remove the pedestrian guardrail (proposal 6) and on plans to remove the bus lay-by in Station Road (Proposal 7).
Alternative proposals
Following consideration of feedback received an alternative scheme has been developed and is shown on the attached plan. The alternative scheme omits the new road hump in Station Road and steepening up of the existing ramps (proposals 1 and 2). As an alternative and to encourage drivers to reduce their speed, the width of the road at the point of entry to the 20mph Pedestrian Zone would be reduced and the road narrowed along Station Road (proposals 1A and 2A).
Trial Road Layout
To test the effects of our alternative proposals there will be a temporary trial of new road layout, between Sunday 11th and Thursday 15th September 2011, we are also taking down the pedestrian railings as part of this trial. This trial will help us assess any changes to vehicle speeds and on vehicle and pedestrian movements in the area and before making a decision on any permanent changes.
