Solihull Striders & Strollers

About

Walking for health: Come and enjoy your local area, meet new friends and look after your health.

Solihull Striders and Strollers health walks scheme works closely with local organisations, including Solihull Care Trust, Solihull Council, Seeds of Hope Project in Kingshurst, as well as local GPs, park rangers and volunteers.

We now have five regular led walks in the borough, based at Dorridge, Kingshurst, Central Solihull, Shirley and Chelmsley Wood, and we are working towards setting up more walks in the near future.

The walks are open to everyone, and all age groups are welcome, even little ones in pushchairs. If you're not used to doing much walking or exercise, you're particularly encouraged to join the fun. The areas we walk in are not hilly or rough, so wheelchair users can join in.

The walks are usually around 30 minutes in duration, though the more experienced walkers sometimes extend that to up to an hour. There is always a very welcome cup of tea or coffee on return, as well as the opportunity to chat and make new friends.

The walks offer a range of routes that allow for the appreciation and exploration of local surroundings, environment and wildlife. All walks meet at 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure.

The walks at Kingshurst take place fortnightly on a Thursday morning, meeting at St Barnabas Church Hall in Overgreen Drive. Routes include Kingshurst Park, Babbs Mill Lake and Yorkswood.

In the same week there is always a walk on a Friday morning starting from Shirley Methodist Church and taking in Shirley Park or the area known as Palmers Rough.

The Chelmsley Wood walk takes place fortnightly on alternate weeks to the Kingshurst and Shirley walks. Walkers currently meet on Tuesday mornings at St. Andrews Church Centre in Pike Drive and walk in Meriden Park or alongside the River Cole.

The Central Solihull walks meet on Wednesday mornings at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre. Routes include Tudor Grange Park, Brueton Park and the surrounding area.

Last but not least, the Dorridge walks meet on Thursday mornings at St George and St Tereas's Church Hall in Station Road.

The walks are all led by trained volunteer walk leaders; their help and support are key to the success of the walks. Our walkers keep on coming, so they clearly find them very worthwhile! More help is always needed, so we are on the lookout for new volunteers to ensure that Striders and Strollers goes from strength to strength.
