Stay Safe with Fireworks
Firework displays can be fun, but each year there are a high number of accidents. Irresponsible use of fireworks causes distress and can make peoples' lives a misery. As a result the government have introduced new controls to the way fireworks are sold and used.
This leaflet is designed to tell you about the new laws relating to fireworks and offer advice about how to stay safe when celebrating with fireworks.
Go to an organised display
They are safer and have spectacular fireworks. They will also have first aid and fire warden facilities to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable night.
If you do decide to have your own display remember the following:

Be considerate to others
Let your neighbours know if you are planning a display. Noisy fireworks disturb older people, children and pets. -
By fireworks that are suitable for your garden
This will usually be category 2 fireworks - Make sure it carries the BS 7114 label
- Never drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks or tending a bonfire
There is now a curfew in place in relation to fireworks.
It is illegal to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for 4 nights of the year. You could be fined if you set off fireworks during the curfew.
- On 5th November the curfew starts at 12 midnight
- On the night of Diwali the curfew begins at 1am
- On New Years' Eve the curfew begins at 1am
- On the night of the Chinese New Year the curfew begins at 1am
The new laws also try and prevent the anti-social us of fireworks
- It is now illegal for under 18s to possess fireworks in a public place
- It is illegal for retailers to sell fireworks to under 18s
- The curfew is designed to prevent fireworks being used late at night
- It is now illegal for individuals to possess large category 4 fireworks, these large fireworks can only be used by professional organisers
Those that are found to break these rules could face an £80 on the spot fine.
