Road markings and signage - 'H' markings
Information on 'H' Markings
What is the purpose of an ‘H’ marking?
An ‘H’ marking may be laid on part of the Public Highway which should be kept clear of parked vehicles either outside an entrance to off-street premises, or where the kerb is dropped to provide a convenient crossing place for pedestrians. A marking will not normally extend more than 1m either side of the dropped kerb.
Markings are advisory only and are not enforceable by the Councils parking Civil Enforcement Officers.
What does an ‘H’ marking look like?
Where will an ‘H’ marking be laid?
We will only provide any new ‘H’ marking on the adopted Public Highway and any marking will be restricted to locations where there are particular difficulties arising from obstruction of accesses caused by parked vehicles where the following criteria apply:
- Lengths of Public Highway that are subject to Limited Waiting Restrictions.
- Parking generated by adjacent local facilities, such as shops, public houses, schools etc
- Private accesses to more than two properties
- Private accesses for Disabled Drivers
What is the process involved?
Once a request for an ‘H’ marking is made we will assess it against the above criteria. Should the request be made for a private access to more than two properties then the neighbouring property will be contacted before a final decision is made.
If a request is granted an order will be raised for the marking to be laid. Once an order is raised the marking is usually laid within 4-6 weeks, but is dependent on the weather and the availability of a lining team.
What is the cost of an ‘H’ marking?
An ‘H’ marking is currently provided at no cost to the resident.
