Signage of Public Rights of Way
Fingerposts and Waymarkers
Have you seen the traditional Oak fingerposts which mark the start and ends of footpaths, bridleways and byways in the Borough?
These fingerposts are positioned where rights of way join or cross roads in the borough and form part of a range of signage found on public paths which help to make sure that users can safely and convientely navigate from one end of the path to the other.
Public rights of way often run across open countryside on routes that are not clearly defined. This signage helps both users and landowners, by ensuring the members of the public are able to follow and stay on the correct line of the path.
It was identified through the Solihull Rights of Way Improvement Plan that there was an opportunity to encourage greater use of the network through the inclusion of destination and distance information on fingerposts where they led to local villages or amenities. Work began last year to identify locations where destination and distance information could be added to fingerposts and these will be replaced as part of an rolling annual inspection and replacement program.
In addition to the traditional Oak fingerposts, routes are marked along their length by green and yellow waymark disks which point out the direction of the route. These waymarks are installed across the network at points where the path changes direction or is difficult to determine.
We also have a range of signage that reminds users of their responsibilities when using public rights of way. Often routes run across working farm land or on private land, and so its important that routes are used in a manner which is sympathetic to and has a minimal impact on their surrounding environment.
We are always looking to improve the signage of the network, however inevitably disks become worn, over grown or missing and consequently need replacing. If you have come across a location recently which you believe needs renewed or improved signage or waymarking, please contact the Rights of Way Team using the details on the right hand side of this page.
