Roads and highways - bridges (general)
General information about bridges. We are the 'Highway Authority' and the 'Bridge Authority' for the bridges and highway structures owned by the Council.
We own and are responsible for approximately 350 bridges/ highway structures. These bridges and structures are inspected on a two yearly basis and these inspections form the basis for a prioritised maintenance programme.
There are also other bridge owners/authorities responsible for bridges and structures within the Borough, as follows:
- The Highway Agency (Trunk Roads and Motorway)
- Network Rail (Railways)
- British Waterways Board (Canals)
As a rule the bridge usually belongs to the organisation (or its successor) that had cause to need the bridge in the first place.
Ownership of bridges has been transferred in some cases, such as when the responsibility for a route changes.
Incidents of damage through vehicle collision, storms, or other causes are investigated as soon as possible.
