Roads and highways - bridge strengthening
Information about bridge strengthening. We have carried out a strength assessment of the bridges/ structures on our road network, with a span equal or greater than 1.5 metres, in accordance with Government guidelines. The results of this assessment form the basis of our bridge strengthening programme.
Pending strengthening or the introduction of a permanent weight restriction, public safety is maintained on those bridges/ structures assessed as weak by the implementation of a rigorous inspection and monitoring regime in accordance with national guidelines or alternatively by using temporary weight restrictions or other measures and restrictions.
Work carried out under the strengthening programme gives priority to principal road bridges. For sub-standard bridges on the non-principal road network, decisions are made whether to impose a permanent weight restriction rather than strengthen the bridge. However, each bridge/structure is considered on its merits taking into account safety, economic and environmental factors.
