Canals
There are two canals within Solihull - the Grand Union Canal and the Stratford-on-Avon Canal.
Canals were built, around 200 years ago, to carry goods, long before railways and motorways. Time moves on and, sadly, most commercial boats and barges have disappeared, but the waterways still retain their charm and character.
Because of their age, canals are surrounded by interesting structures. In fact you will find more listed buildings by canals than anywhere else in Britain. British Waterways, look after the canals and their heritage. Any improvements are designed so they fit in with the older environment.
Most canals have towpaths that were used by the horses to pull the boats. They are very pleasant to walk and are teaming with wild flowers and animals, but remember that ducks and swans expect to be fed! You can also cycle along the towpaths and local bye-ways to explore the countryside around the canals.
