Roads and highways - closures and diversions
Information about road closures and diversions for works on the highway.
Sometimes works on the highway, some large deliveries, or community events, require a road to be closed temporarily to general traffic. A list of current road closures can be found at Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders
Such closures require a temporary Traffic Regulation Order, which is issued by the Council in its role as the highway authority. A temporary TRO could last for up to 18 months and there is no right of objection. Emergency TRO's can also be brought into force immediately if the Council considers there is a potential danger to road users and/or the public. Usually, temporary TRO's will not hinder access for the emergency services.
Generally all costs involved for both the closure and diversion signing will have to be met by the person requesting the closure.
As there is a legal process to be undertaken, at least three months notice of any closure is required.
