Road safety - driver training
Information about the benefits of driver training.Driver Improvement Course
When a person is involved in a Road Traffic Incident, under certain conditions the person/s involved are given an option to either have the incident referred to the Crown Prosecution Service where they may receive a fine and penalty points on their driving licence, or an opportunity to attend a National Driver Improvement Course. The Driver Improvement Course is a positive alternative to prosecution which helps through re-training and education to reduce the drivers chance of being involved in a road collision in the future. It frees up Police time and court time and helps reduce levels of injury on the roads. The scheme is run in the interests of road safety.
The Driver Improvement scheme is a national programme with local centres operating across the West Midlands, Solihull's course is currently based in Chelmsley Wood.
The Course is delivered by specialist Department for Transport Approved Driving Instructors and Road Safety Officers. The Course involves a mixture of driving theory, which combines the latest thinking on defensive driving techniques with modern training methods and practical on-road driving lasting over a day and a half.
Studies on the effectiveness of the scheme show that those completing the course reduce their chances of being involved in road collisions. The vast majority of those who have taken the course comment that they feel they have benefited from it, and often say that everyone should have the opportunity to take it, rather than waiting until they have been involved in an incident.
