'We all should have a choice of how to balance our work and life'
Employers are developing a wide range of Work-Life Balance options. Below are just some examples of Work-Life Balance practices .
| Flexi-time |
Provides people with a choice about working hours usually outside certain agreed core times |
|---|---|
| Staggered hours |
Give employees different start, finish and break times. Employers may use this to cover long opening hours |
| Time off in lieu |
Where employees agree with managers to take time off at a mutually convenient time to make up for extra hours worked |
| Compressed Working |
Allows people to work their total number of hours over a shorter number of working days such as a nine day fortnight |
| Annualised hours |
Working time is organised on the basis of the number of hours to be worked over the year rather than a week. This is excellent for seasonal work. |
| Part-time work |
This has no legal definition but the government define it as less than 30 hours a Week |
| Job Sharing |
Involves two people carrying out the duties of a post that would normally be done by one person |
| Term time working |

| Shift working |
Shift swapping - employees can negotiate working times to suit their needs and re-arrange shifts amongst themselves or within teams Self rostering - Gives employees more control over their working times around certain parameters |
| Working from Home/Teleworking |
New technology has made this easier and enables employees to work from other locations such as home or another worksite and to stay in touch with work |
| Childcare support |
Such as childcare vouchers, workplace childcare facilities and schemes to help them find childcare such as your local Childrens Information Service (see further information) |
| Breaks from work |
Such as: maternity leave, paternity leave, parental leave, time off for dependants adoption leave, career break, sabbatical, employee volunteering |
