Timing of collections over Christmas and the New Year
We may collect at a different time on your scheduled day due to the extra amounts of rubbish and recycling. Can you please ensure your recycling and rubbish is out by 7:00am on the day of collection and wait until after 4:00 pm to report a missed collection.
There's no limit to the amount of recycling we'll collect on your scheduled day but any additional recycling should be placed in a suitable container. This could be your old recycling box or hessian/jute bag, please don't use carrier bags/plastic bags or cardboard boxes (if it’s wet these get soggy and the contents fall out).
To check what you can and can’t recycle download a Christmas collections leaflet or visit our what goes in my container page
Don’t forget to remove all packaging and break down cardboard so it fits in your brown bin or clear sacks. If your bin is full cardboard can be left alongside it but must be broken down to fit within a wheelie bin.
We'll be collecting extra rubbish between Wednesday 27 December and Tuesday 2 January. Can you please place extra rubbish in a tied black bag and leave it next to your black wheelie bin or purple sacks. From Wednesday 3 January normal collections resume and we'll no longer collect extra rubbish.
Real Christmas Trees
Due to changes at our waste treatment facility we can no longer collect real Christmas trees from the kerbside. There are several things you can do with your real Christmas tree once the 12th night has passed:
- when purchasing your Christmas tree - see if the retailer offers a take-back scheme for your used tree, this service is usually provided by garden centres and tree suppliers
- if you purchase a tree with roots - why not replant it in a pot in your garden and use it again next year? Or have you considered renting a Christmas tree? For more information visit the Woodland Trusts website
- if you live in the B90 or B91 postcodes - for a charitable donation volunteers from St Mary’s Hospice will collect and recycle your Christmas tree
- real Christmas trees can be cut up and placed in your green wheelie bin. Remember that garden waste collections only operate between March and November and that tree stumps need to be no larger than 3 inches or 7.5cm in diameter
- Christmas trees can be recycled at Bickenhill Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC)
For opening times and information visit our HWRC page.
Before visiting the site, don’t forget to separate your recycling and waste. Please note that the site can get very busy over the Christmas period and queues are likely.
