Armed Forces Community Garden

Armed Forces Community Covenant - Silver Award Employers logo

We are developing a garden in Hillfield Park which will benefit veterans and their family members, local schools and other members of the community.

The garden will be a peaceful sanctuary for remembrance and reflection. We also hope it will be a place to help people overcome isolation, as it will provide a welcoming place to meet up and interact with others.

The concept behind the garden is one of ‘healing habitats’. It is an eco-therapy project which comprises a series of therapeutic natural habitats for people to explore. These habitats aim to improve bio-diversity and provide opportunities to improve and maintain the wellbeing of the armed forces community through nature-based activities.

The garden will be divided into three zones, with each area having its own feel and purpose:

Zone 1 is where the project originated and is the community wildlife garden, providing a valuable meeting place for people.

From there you can walk into zone 2 which will be a summer meadow and community orchard.

Zone 3 will be community woodland and follow the Royal British Legion’s ‘Battleback’ principles to create opportunities for active recovery.

Support has been received to develop the designs from the Royal British Legion, local veterans and serving personnel, army medical teams and local community groups.

It is anticipated ground work on the garden will take place over the coming months with the planting set to commence in the summer, weather permitting.
