Food safety

We inspect food premises to ensure they comply with food health and safety standards.

The Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme

Run in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme rates the hygiene standards of places where you eat or shop.

Before eating out or ordering in, check how seriously a food outlet takes hygiene.

Make a complaint

You might want to complain about unhygienic food outlet or food you suspect has made you unwell because it:

  • was sold past its use by date
  • is mouldy
  • is not safe to eat (such as food containing pieces of metal, glass or plastic)
  • is incorrectly described or wrongly labelled (e.g. a vegetarian meal that contains meat)

Keep the evidence

If you’re complaining about food:

  • keep the food including any labels, containers or packaging
  • if you’re concerned about the safety of keeping it, wrap it in a plastic bag or suitable container and freeze it. If you don’t have a freezer you can put it in the fridge
  • keep your receipts or note down the date and time that you bought the food
  • if you can see something in your food don’t remove it

Submit a food safety complaint

If you are complaining about suspected food poisoning you should visit your GP, providing a sample may help with our investigation.

Illness is not always due to the last thing you have eaten, it may be something you have eaten several days before. If no food poisoning bacteria are found in your sample your symptoms could be due to another illness such as a stomach virus.

What we will do

We may contact you to discuss your complaint and decide the best course of action. Some investigations involve complex analysis and this may take longer than you would expect.

We do not have any influence over companies in relation to goodwill gestures and we do not seek compensation. If you feel you may be entitled to compensation you should seek legal advice.
