Closures and changes to Council services

  • Bickenhill Household Waste Recycling Centre - will re-open on 18 May.
  • Births - birth registration appointments are deferred until further notice. The government has issued guidance for parents of newborn babies on how to claim child benefit without needing to register the birth first. Find out more here.
  • Bulky waste collections - resumed on Tuesday 5 May. Find out more here.
  • Car parking charges in Council-operated car parks and on-street parking bays in Solihull town centre, Knowle and Shirley have been suspended until further notice. Find out more here.
  • Cemeteries & Funerals – Widney Manor Cemetery to open on weekdays as restrictions start to ease. Solihull Council will open Widney Manor Cemetery on weekdays, 4 – 6pm, from Monday 1 June.  The council took the decision in line with government guidance and after monitoring the situation. All three cemeteries – Widney Manor, Robin Hood and Woodlands – are currently open at weekends but Widney Manor is the first to reopen for a limited time each day during the week as it doesn’t have a crematorium.   • Citizenship Ceremonies - those applying to become a British Citizen are usually expected to book a citizenship ceremony within three months of being sent an invitation from the Home Office. Due to the current pandemic, UK Visas and Immigration have extended this to six months. You will not have to start your application again or  pay an additional fee if your application is delayed because of Coronavirus.
  • Community Centres - closed to the public until further notice.
  • Core Theatre and Studio - closed to the public until further notice.
  • Council events - all Council-run events cancelled until further notice.
  • Council leisure centres - closed to the public until further notice.
  • Council meetings - the majority of Council meetings are postponed until further notice. Planning Committee will takeplace virtually from Wednesday 29 April. Find out more here.
  • Day services for people 65 and over - closed from Monday 23 March until further notice.
  • Day services for people with disabilities - closed from Monday 23 March until further notice.
  • Front line environmental and highway services some services in public areas such as grounds maintenance and grass cutting are continuing. For more information see here.
  • Garden waste collections - started on Monday 4 May. There may be some disruption to the service. Find out more here.
  • Giving notice of marriage or civil partnership - notices of marriage and civil partnership are deferred until further notice.
  • Libraries - closed to the public until further notice.
  • Licensing - the Licensing Walk-In Centre at Moat Lane is closed to the public until further notice. Customers can email enquiries to
  • Parks - tennis courts reopened on Wednesday 13 May, but all other communal areas in parks are closed to the public. Find out more here.

  • Public Transport - information about transport in the West Midlands.
  • Registration of Deaths - following a change in legislation (Coronavirus Act 2020) the registration of deaths will now be completed over the phone until further notice. To make a telephone appointment please ring  0121 704 8002 and ensure you give us your preferred telephone number to contact you on. A registrar will contact you at the appointment time and complete the registration with you over the telephone. Arrangements are also being implemented so that the notification can be done by medical personnel rather than relatives where required.
    Qualified Informants Changes -
    • The list of qualified informants is temporarily extended to include a funeral director (where they are acting on behalf of the family).
    • Funeral directors are an addition to the existing list of qualified informants rather than a replacement and family members are still allowed (and may be preferred).
  • Residential parking - we have suspended the enforcement of parking restrictions in residential areas until further notice.
  • Schools will be closed for most pupils until further notice, but will be providing a service for children of key workers and vulnerable children in line with the recent guidance. The most up to date information on schools can be found here.
  • School crossing patrols - suspended until further notice.
  • Sexual health services - the two Umbrella clinics in Solihull (Boots, Mell Square and Chelmsley Wood Primary Care) are currently closed. Information and advice is still available online at and by phone: 0121 237 5700 (9.00am-4.30pm Mon-Fri)
  • Solihull Connect walk in centres - closed from Monday 23 March until further notice.
  • Weddings and Civil Partnership Ceremonies - Due to COVID-19 bookings for Wedding and Civil Partnership ceremonies are suspended until further notice. If you currently have a confirmed booking and would like to rearrange the date please contact the team on 0121 704 8002.
