Mayor opens new dementia care home in Shirley

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Stuart Davis, officially opened Solihull’s brand new, innovative dementia care home in Shirley on Wednesday 4 March.

Tanworth Court on Tanworth Lane is a high specification care home.  Designed by the Council's Building Design Group and funded by the Council, it delivers both nursing and residential care services for people with dementia and/or physical health needs.

The home provides affordable, high quality care for those funded by the Council, the NHS and people who pay for their own care.  It is being run by PrimeLife, a major provider of social care in the UK with support from the local GP surgery, GPS Medical.

Amongst those celebrating with the Mayor was Councillor Karen Grinsell, Solihull Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, and partners at Solihull Age UK, NHS Birmingham and Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Those attending had the opportunity to have a tour of the home, meet residents and staff.

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Stuart Davis said: “It was a privilege to be asked to officially open Tanworth Court.  It’s great to see a new care home offering support to people with dementia in the borough.

“I was certainly impressed when I had my tour; it looks fabulous and is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when you put people at the heart of a new venture.

“I do hope residents enjoy their new home. I am sure staff will welcome the opportunity to work in such a modern and comfortable home.  I wish Tanworth Court all the best for the future.”

Councillor Karen Grinsell said: “I am so pleased to see Tanworth Court’s first few residents begin to settle into their new home.

“Tanworth Court has taken over three years of careful planning and hard work.  It’s fantastic to see it become reality.  Thanks to everyone involved in this project from my officers at the Council to the care home staff for their hard work and commitment and to Speller Metcalfe who built this home.

“The home is part of the Council's contribution to meeting the needs of the growing population of older people in the borough.

“It is now over to PrimeLife to turn this wonderful building into a home for years to come.”

James Wood, Managing Director of PrimeLife said:  “We are proud to extend our care services within this brand new development alongside our ‘sister home’ Lyndon Croft in the north of the borough.  It will provide first class facilities within a caring and homely environment, ensuring local people have access to services that meet aspirations for themselves and their loved ones.

“Our manager Karen Mayo very much looks forward to welcoming anyone who might wish to come and view the home and discuss life at Tanworth Court along with all care services offered.”
