Council gives the go ahead to start flood mitigation schemes in Solihull

Four flood mitigation schemes were approved at last night’s Environment & Highways Cabinet Decision Session (Tuesday 1st September) following the news of the Council securing funding of £440k from the Environment Agency.

These schemes will introduce Property Level Resilience and Resistance (PLR) measures to homes to reduce the impact of flooding.

Owners of 104 properties will be contacted by letter and invited to fill in an online questionnaire to scope out their requirements and to arrange individual property surveys.

As part of the works, flood risk specialists appointed by the Council will be contacting residents directly to undertake these surveys in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines

The Council will continue to look at securing further funding so more schemes can be rolled out to other areas that are at risk from flooding.

Councillor Ken Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways, said: “It’s great that now we have the funding we can offer residents of over 100 properties the opportunity to better protect their homes from flooding.  It is now a decision for each homeowner to make if they want to take up this offer.

“I am so pleased we have been able to honour our promise of two years ago to investigate what can be done and that now we are in a position to provide practical support to make peoples’ homes safer.

“I can assure all the other residents not included in this first stage of works that we will be submitting further funding bids to include other areas and identify properties that could benefit from similar flood mitigation measures.”
