Solihull Council encourages residents to support local, safely

Solihull Council has made a fresh call for people to support their local centres and high streets, while following key Covid-19 safety guidelines.

As part of our ‘Support Local’ campaign, which encourages residents to think local and support local, posters reminding people that our centres are ‘open for business’ are now displayed at some of our retail locations across the borough. These posters also encourage residents to follow Covid-19 guidance by wearing a face covering and to be kind and keep a safe distance from others.

The campaign is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Council and partners Solihull Business Improvement District (BID), Shirley Marketing Group, Visit Knowle and Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre. This work also includes offering businesses advice on how to operate in a Covid-safe manner.

Councillor Karen Grinsell, Deputy Leader of Solihull Council, said:

“As more businesses have opened up under challenging circumstances in Solihull and the West Midlands, it is important that we do all we can to support them, which will help with economic recovery here in Shirley and across the region.

“At the same time, we must keep ourselves and other people safe when we are out and about in our local centres and on our high streets. We can do this by following the simple steps of keeping our distance from other people and by wearing a face covering, unless exempt.

“Our message to residents is to ‘think local, shop local’ and be mindful of others whilst doing so.”

Kim Hulse, from Visit Knowle, said:

“Visit Knowle are great supporters of the think local, support local campaign. Knowle is full of fabulous businesses, many of whom have adapted over the last six months, offering new products and services. By supporting local, not only do you get a friendly welcome, expert advice and awesome products, you're also supporting our local economy, local jobs and contributing to the sense of community that makes Knowle a great place to live, work and visit.”

Neil Griffin, Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre, Centre Manager, said:

“It is wonderful to see more businesses opening again as the community pushes through this pandemic. Understandably, shopping can still be a worrying thought for some people, which is why Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre is trying its best to encourage shoppers and staff to wear face masks if they can and to be mindful of social distancing. Please do support your local stores and businesses in the heart of the community.”
