If you have care and support needs, adaptations to your home, for example, a stairlift, can make it easier to live there independently for as long as possible.

What is a Disabled Facilities Grant?

The purpose of a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is to enable adults and children with disabilities to move around and access their home.

A Disabled Facilities Grant is funding available to individuals to enable adaptations to their home, such as widening doors and installing ramps for wheelchair access, adapting a bathroom or bedroom or making improvements to ensure that individuals can access their garden. Read these case studies for examples of major adaptations.

A financial assessment (also known as a means test) may be required to access this funding. This means your income and savings may be taken into account to determine whether or not a grant can be paid and the amount of contribution (if any) you would need to make.

Who can apply for a DFG?

If you, (or someone living in your property) are disabled and need to make changes to your home, you could be eligible. For example if you:

  • are physically disabled
  • have a learning disability
  • have age-related needs

Either you, or the person you’re applying for, must also:

  • own the property or be a tenant
  • intend to live in the property during the grant period (see local land charge section below)

You can also apply for a grant if you’re a landlord and have a tenant who needs this type of support.

If you are a Solihull Community Housing tenant, there is a separate scheme for adaptations.
