Buying a grave or cremated remains plot

Bereavement Services

We are now able to offer reserves for cremated remains plots at each of our cemeteries.

We are now able to offer reserves for full burial graves at only Widney Manor Cemetery.

When you buy a grave or cremated remains plot, you are buying an exclusive right of burial grant, not the land itself. This means that you lease the land for a set number of years.

After you have paid the required fee, we will issue the grant of exclusive rights of burial (the deed). The grant will show:

  • the name of the purchaser
  • the grave number
  • how many years the exclusive right of burial is for

The exclusive right of burial includes the right to have a memorial installed on the grave. You can order headstones from a funeral director or stonemason. They will apply for a permit on your behalf. The permit application must meet the cemetery specifications, which are available on request. A stonemason registered with BRAMM (British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons) must fit the headstone.

Cremated remains plots are available at all three cemeteries:

  • Robin Hood
  • Widney Manor
  • Woodlands

Full burial plots are available at:

  • Widney Manor Cemetery

How do I apply?

We will only accept a reservation for a full burial grave for those aged 18+.  You may only have one grave in your name and payment must be by the grave holder.

Proof of residency

Your proof of Solihull residency could be one of the following:

  • a council tax bill dated within the last two years
  • a driving licence that lists an address for paying council tax to Solihull Council. You can check this at GOV.UK
  • a utility bill for a property within Solihull dated within the last two years
  • any medical or government letters to you, at a Solihull property, dated within the last two years

The price paid for a cremated remains plot will depend on your residency.

You, or the deceased, are a resident of Solihull if:

  • you pay or paid council tax to Solihull Council
  • they lived in Solihull in the last two years of their life

If our social care team placed the deceased in a care home outside of Solihull, they will still be a 'resident'.

Paying the deposit

We issue cremated remains plots on a ‘next available’ basis. If you wish to select your plot, this is an optional extra and is payable when we take your deposit.

You will be able to select this option in your application.

You will need to pay a non-refundable deposit by credit or debit card.

Once you have completed your application form, please telephone 0121 709 7009 to pay your non-refundable deposit and grave selection fee.  We will be able to arrange your appointment to select your grave once you have made your payment.

Reserving a cremated remains plot

If you do not require a grave selection appointment, we will process your application within 5 days.  You will then have a further 30 days to submit your proof of residency where applicable to robinhoodcemetery@solihull.gov.uk and make full and final payment.

If you have selected a cremated remains plot, we will allocate your plot number, and you will have a further 30 days to make full and final payment.

You must make the final payment to secure your Exclusive Right of Burial for your cremated remains plot. This can be paid by credit or debit card. The deposit will be deducted from the balance of your lease.

Once you make the final payment, we will issue your deed, and your application will be complete.

If you do not pay the balance, we will notify you and cancel your application.
