Solihull’s HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) programme returns this summer with the highest number and range of activities, since launching four years ago.

The programme, accessible to all families in receipt of benefits related free school meals, provides important support to parents and carers, particularly during the long school summer holiday period. Activities are available for both children and families, with parents and carers also able to get involved in the fun.

A number of new providers will mean additional activities are available such as clay molding from Wild Earth Movement and sessions from Super SEN, offering activities for children with additional needs, such as cooking and a sensory disco.

Youth activities for 11 to 16 year olds are on offer, which will include hands on career workshops from fashion design to engineering and vet practice to healthcare, via provider Ignite. Whilst transition sessions for current Year 6 children, will help with the adaption from primary to secondary school.

Councillor Karen Grinsell, Leader of Solihull Council and Cabinet Member for Children & Education, said: “The Solihull HAF programme has continued to develop, adding further places for 11 to 16 year olds, children with additional needs, family activities, as well as increasing the range of sessions available across the board. This summer, over 40 providers will be supporting children at nearly 50 venues across the borough - resulting in the programme offering something for children of all ages to take part in.”

“The feedback we have received from families, demonstrates how crucial the programme is in supporting eligible families. This is especially the case during the long summer holiday’s where juggling work and childcare can be particularly challenging.”

Many activities are also accessible to families not eligible for the HAF programmes, on a chargeable basis, at great value prices.
