On Monday 23 June, the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Annette Mackenzie, was joined by members of the public and local dignitaries, to be the first to officially walk Solihull’s new Military History Trail.

The launch of the trail marks the start of Armed Forces Week, showing support for the Armed Forces community – from serving personnel and reservists to veterans, cadets and service families.

A walking route around the town centre visiting 11 sites of military interest, the trail holds space to honour and appreciate those who fight for their country, while commemorating and showing gratitude for those who have given their lives in service.

Along the route, familiar local landmarks allow their fascinating wartime stories to be told. From key buildings that played a role in the war effort, like the former Solihull Council House and Solihull School’s rifle range, to public spaces with unexpected links to military history, like Malvern Park and Brueton Gardens, the trail highlights how everyday places today were once part of extraordinary times.

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Annette Mackenzie, said:

“It’s an honour to support Armed Forces Week in this way. This week is about recognising the courage and commitment of all those who serve and have served – from our veterans and cadets to the people protecting and supporting our country around the world today.

“I’m particularly proud to launch the Military History Trail – it offers a unique opportunity to celebrate our town’s rich military history, honour those who served, and create a legacy of remembrance.

“Many have given their lives for our freedom. Walking the trail and stopping to see and read how our town and its people have helped protect our country over the years has been a moving way to connect with Solihull’s heritage and reflect on the role our borough has played in wider national service and sacrifice.”

Councillor Karen Grinsell, Leader of Solihull Council, said:

“Our Armed Forces community continues to make huge contributions to life in the UK and here in Solihull. Learning about the town’s military history on the trail has been an eye-opening and humbling experience. It’s a way we can show appreciation and bring our community together in shared remembrance to the fallen and support for those in service.

“I’d encourage anyone who’s interested to download the map and walk the trail.

“We thank everyone who came to mark this important occasion with us. It’s a small but meaningful gesture to show our enduring support for our Armed Forces – past, present and future.”
