Finding the perfect fit through work experience

After two years of job searching, Sabba has just started her first job - a permanent role in childcare, a sector she is passionate about - thanks to the Youth Trailblazer programme.

The programme aims to connect young people aged 18-21 with employers through subsidised work experience placements. Despite her Level 3 qualification in Childcare Studies, Sabba struggled to find her first job. After signing up to the programme with Solihull Council’s Employment and Skills Team, she was matched with a soft play centre for a three-week unpaid placement to gain some practical experience and take her first step towards employment.

Sabba said: “I was really struggling, but the team showed me lots of options and supported me from the start. They made everything easier for me. I really enjoyed the voluntary placement. It gave me the experience and confidence to move forward.”

Sabba was then matched with Bosworth Wood Community Day Nursery CIC managed by Kay Dorris, for a 12-week paid placement. Having experienced recruitment challenges, Kay saw the programme as an alternative way for recruitment.

Kay said: “Sabba’s been great from the start. As she’s settled in, she’s built strong relationships with the staff and children here. She’s become an invaluable member of the team. When the placement was coming to an end, we couldn’t imagine letting her go. She’s fitted in really well and already has her key group of children, which is why offered her a permanent role.”

Sabba said: “I was very happy when I’ve finally received a job offer after such a long time. It was all because of the programme! I’ve been telling my friends and family about it because it’s helped me so much, and I want to let more people know about it.”

When asked what she would like to say to other employers, Kay said: “It’s a great initiative. I’d encourage employers to give it a go. It may help you find the missing piece of the puzzle you never knew you were missing!”

Councillor Heather Delaney, Solihull Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Skills, said: “Finding that first job can be a challenge for young people, even when they have the skills and motivation to succeed. Through Youth Trailblazer, we're helping young people gain valuable experience and move into sustainable employment. Our support is not limited to young people. We offer free employment support to all residents aged 18+, as well as local employers looking to recruit. I’d encourage both residents and employers to get in touch with our Employment and Skills Team.”
