Karen’s Column – Friday 20 February

I am delighted to hear that work will start shortly on new gardens at the Riverside Family Hub. I had the chance to find out more about the plans on a visit last week. It will provide a new calm and safe green space for children, young people, parents and carers to enjoy, particularly in the sunnier months. The project has been made possible thanks to Severn Trent Community Funding, and I would like to thank them for their generosity. It will be well used when it opens this summer.

On Wednesday, I joined young children in care as they worked on an exciting art project in Malvern Park. We had lots of fun getting creative with the children as they demonstrated their artistic talents. There will be more information on the project soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

Earlier this month, Muse received planning permission for the first phase of the Holbeche Place development (formerly known as Mell Square development). They are now getting ready to share plans for phase two and have launched a Community Conversation.

Phase two is on the old House of Fraser site and their proposals include affordable homes, green space for residents, and retail units. Their first drop-in event took place on Wednesday and a second will be held this Saturday, 10am until 3pm, at 12 Mill Lane (next door to Photo Zone). If you’re around in the town centre on Saturday, do go along and join the conversation.

We’ve had a diverse array of religious and cultural celebrations this week including the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday), Lunar New Year and Ramadan. It’s rare to see them all overlap in a calendar year. It’s also a special time for reflection, renewal and tradition and I know a lot of people across the borough will be marking these events.

As half-term comes to an end, I hope the weather didn’t dampen the spirits, and children, parents and teachers have enjoyed the break. As we start the new working week and the school run gets back to normal, you should see an improvement in the pothole situation. The Council has committed extra resources to completing repairs, and crews are working to repair our roads as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the wet and cold weather combination has not been on our side but that should improve as we start to feel Spring is on its way.

Thanks for reading,
