Karen’s Column Wednesday 21 October 2026

On Monday we held an extraordinary meeting of Full Council. We passed a motion which condemned the comments made by the three former councillors that came to light last week. I was pleased that it was passed unanimously, supported by councillors from all parties. We also resolved to appoint replacements to the various vacancies left by the resignation of those councillors.

Councillor Annette Mackenzie has been appointed to serve as Deputy Mayor for the rest of the Civic Year. She was Mayor of Solihull until April this year, so she’s very well versed in the role, and I’ve no doubt she will bring her kindness and warmth to events around Solihull until May.

We also appointed to vacancies on various external boards, you can read all the details on agenda item 5 of the minutes. We decided to wait to fill the seat on the Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens Stakeholder Trust until there are some Castle Bromwich Councillors in place.

Speaking of which, the by-election to choose three new councillors for the ward will take place on Thursday 26 November. This also means we will be entering something called Pre-Election Period. This restricts what news and information the council can share publicly, so this column will stop after this edition and resume once the election has been held.

Until then - thanks for reading,

Karen
