This week, the Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Sardul Marwa MBE JP had the pleasure of hosting pupils from Kineton Green Primary School for their monthly school council. Although some of them were shy at first, the discussions soon picked up with talks of improvements for break times and introduction of new clubs for pupils, especially when they were given the chance to use the microphones in the chamber.
After their school council meeting, they had the chance to ask the Mayor of Solihull some questions like what his favourite part about being a Mayor was, and which other jobs he’s worked in the past.
The Mayor spoke about the importance of school councils for young people:
“It was great to host the pupils from Kineton Green and be able to speak to them about the role of a Mayor, the job of a councillor, and their school council.
“I was really impressed by the thoughtful questions, and it was really encouraging to see children getting involved with democracy at the earliest opportunity. It gives them great experiences for later in life and shows them that their decisions and views matter.”
The pupils also had a chance to tour the civic suite and the Mayor’s parlour, even getting the opportunity for each of them to try on his ceremonial robes and chain. He then gave them special certificates, recognising their hard work and valued role on the school council.
