Library users in Solihull will soon be able to benefit from longer opening hours at three libraries thanks to new Open Plus technology.
Open Plus allows registered library members to access their local library outside of normal staffed opening hours, using easy and secure self-service technology.
Dickens Heath, Hobs Moat and Balsall Common libraries will have the technology installed between winter 2026 and spring 2027. Go-live dates and full details of how to access Open Plus at these sites will be announced before the launch.
The project is part of ongoing work to make libraries more accessible and flexible community spaces.
Ahead of the launch, residents are being asked to share what they would like to see in the three libraries as part of Open Plus. Feedback will be used to help determine how Open Plus looks when it is launched. Visit www.solihull.gov.uk/open-plus for more information.
Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Wazma Qais, said:
"Our libraries are at the heart of our communities, and we want to make them even more welcoming, flexible, and accessible spaces for everyone to enjoy.
“Open Plus will extend opening hours and give people choice of how and when they use their local library, fitting visits in around work, school, families and other commitments.
“This increased access to the library will be in addition to the regular opening hours and anyone who prefers to visit when the library is staffed can continue to do so.”
Open Plus access will be available for registered library members who have completed registration and induction. Library users will then be able to access the libraries using a library card and a PIN, with security systems and CCTV monitoring the building.
During Open Plus hours, people will be able to borrow and return books; use computers, printing and Wi-Fi; read, study and work; and join workshops, activities and events run by other organisations.
Staff will continue to be available during normal opening hours to provide advice and support for those who prefer to visit when the library is staffed.
