Solihull Council gears up for moving traffic enforcement

Cllr Ken Hawkins at the A34 Stratford Road/Richard Lewis Way junction in Shirley

New moving traffic enforcement cameras are being rolled out in Solihull to help improve road safety, cut congestion, and reduce dangerous driving.

Solihull Council has installed cameras and signage to enforce prohibited U-turns on the A34 Stratford Road at Richard Lewis Way in Shirley. Enforcement begins from 1 June 2026.

Three further sites will also benefit from the safety measures over the coming months, with go-live dates to be confirmed. These locations and offences enforced are:

  • B4102 Warwick Road/New Road junction – entering and stopping in a yellow box junction
  • Elm Farm Avenue, Marston Green - prohibition of driving except for access (School Streets)
  • Station Road into Poplar Road - entry to and waiting in a pedestrian zone except for access

The Council is one of a number of local authorities in England which has been granted powers from the Government to enforce existing moving traffic offences.

All four locations have been chosen following a public consultation with residents and assessments from independent consultants, collision and offences data, road safety risk analysis, and site surveys.

Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, Cllr Ken Hawkins, said:

“I am pleased to see these new powers rolled out in Solihull, which strengthens our commitment to improving road safety.

“Whilst the majority of motorists do follow the rules, there is a minority who don’t, putting others at risk.

“Stronger enforcement at these locations will reduce dangerous manoeuvres, cut congestion, and ultimately make our roads safer for road users and pedestrians alike – including school children.”

During the first six months of going live, first-time offenders will receive a written warning. Penalty Charged Notices (PCNs) will be issued for repeat offences within the first six months, and for any offence at the end of the six-month warning period. PCNs are £70 reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days, and motorists can appeal the fine.

Funding for the cameras has been allocated from the Council's Civil Parking/Bus Lane Enforcement reserve, after which the cameras will be self-funded, with any surplus income paid back into this statutory ringfenced reserve.
