Solihull Council treats children with SEND to afternoon tea!

The Mayor stood with three Lode Heath School students and their teacher posing for a photo in front of a Solihull SEND Awards banner.

Almost two months after the heartwarming Solihull SEND Awards, Solihull Council hosted all the children who received a nomination for afternoon tea.

On Wednesday 28 January, 28 pupils from six different primary schools across the borough received a warm welcome to the Civic Suite by The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Annette Mackenzie.

The spacious refreshment room allowed the children to play freely, or to express themselves through writing or drawing on dazzling gold stars. The children were also thrilled to get a photo with the Mayor to commemorate the special day.

19 nominees from secondary and special schools attended their own afternoon tea on Tuesday 10 February to honour their achievements and positive impact on others. Whilst it was a little calmer than the primary event, there was still plenty of fun.

The Mayor of Solihull was delighted to keep the celebrations of SEND children across the borough alive. She said:

“Every child I welcomed into the Civic Suite brought such warmth, courage and positivity, despite the challenges they may face. Their resilience and determination are truly inspiring, and they remind us all of the strength that exists within our young people.

“I was equally moved by the dedication and compassion shown by the teachers and school staff who support them every day. Their commitment helps ensure that every child feels valued, understood and able to thrive.

“Solihull is proud to stand alongside our most vulnerable young people and their families, offering encouragement, guidance and opportunity. The afternoons were filled with balloons, cake and joyful laughter, but above all they were filled with pride.

“Celebrating these remarkable children felt not only right, but essential - their achievements, perseverance and bright futures deserve to be recognised and cherished.”
