Elmwood Family Hub is celebrating a new addition to the team after JJ successfully completed a Supported Internship placement.
Designed for young people aged 16 and over with an Education, Health and Care Plan, Supported Internship combines practical work experience and formal training to prepare young people for the world of work. JJ supported the hub for 2 days a week throughout the last academic year and received training on the remaining days.
The placement was JJ’s first. Although he was quite anxious at first, his confidence has grown significantly over time. He recently led a music session for 25 people and performed his favourite Beatles songs at the Community Fun Day, helping to welcome visitors to the hub.
Catherine Price, Solihull Council’s Family Hub Co-ordinator, offered the placement.
Catherine said: “It’s been wonderful to see his confidence grow. We are a busy hub, so it’s great to have some extra help through offering a placement. We’ve received a lot of compliments about JJ. As his placement was coming to an end, we saw an opportunity to continue his journey and offered him a role. We’re excited about what his future holds with us over the next couple of years.”
JJ said: “I was really happy and excited when I got the job offer. This is my first paid job, and it makes me feel more positive and confident about the future. My family are proud of me, and I’m proud of myself.”
Among those celebrating JJ's success is Mary Evans, Solihull Council's Family Hub Support Officer. Having known JJ since he was 10, she is incredibly proud of his achievement and the hard work he has put into becoming more independent.
Catherine continued: “I’d encourage every employer to take part in Supported Internships. It’s a great opportunity for young people to take important steps towards future employment, and it’s a great help for the team as well.”
