Dog mess is a nuisance and health risk. If you take a dog out (on or off the lead) you must clear up its mess, even if you are not the owner. If your dog goes out on its own and makes a mess, you’re still responsible.
Clear up dog mess by placing it in a bag and put it into any litter bin, please do not place this in someone else's black bin.
We have installed special dog litter bins in parks. Having no bags is not an excuse for failing to clear up.
If you're cleaning up after your dog at home please double bag any mess and place this in your black wheelie bin.
Our duty to remove dog mess
We can only remove dog fouling from council owned roads and pavements.
Any dog mess on private land is the responsibility of the landowner.
Our Litter Blitz crew can usually clear an area within 48 hours of a report.
The rules about dog fouling
Our Environmental Enforcement Officers wearing body cameras can issue on the spot fines of £100 to anyone who doesn't clear up after their dog. If you fail to pay the fine you may be taken to court.
Exemptions
People who are registered blind (and sometimes owners of other assistance dogs) are exempt from these rules.
