Nature of work

Libraries change lives through:

  • Promoting enjoyment in reading and other cultural and creative activities.
  • Raising aspirations and building skills so people can achieve their full potential ,regardless of background. Actively sharing information, encouraging people to engage with, to create and learn from each other providing trusted and practical support and advice to those who need it.

Libraries deliver services through a number of different access routes. These include a network of a flagship library, 12 community libraries, a community access point, the homes library service for those unable to get to the library themselves, a mobile library service and a digital offering through the 24/7 library service.

Libraries offer a range of services, which includes free WiFi, free loans for books and DVDs and audio books for hire. Free eBooks, eAudiobooks, eNewspapers and eMagazines.

The virtual library contains newspapers in over 26 languages which can be viewed in different formats for people with visual impairments. Access to computers and the Internet is available at all sites and enables access to Which Online, Ancestry etc.

The total number of library service hours delivered each week is 669.9 which includes: volunteer led hours, the 24/7 library site based hours and those delivered by the home and mobile service. We have a broad range of events, activities and offers based around digital, information and learning offers, health and well-being service offers and a cultural offer. We engage with all age groups through partnerships and community engagement at a local level. These offers vary from Heritage and Local studies resources, Family History courses and groups  through to Rhyme times and Story Times and self organised group activities.

To enable us to process anonymised information about the profile of our library membership and to enable contact about library related matters e.g.  reservations, renewals ,membership, issues , outstanding charges and use of computers.

Where relevant we process a variety of information relating to individuals including:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Ethnicity
  • Contact details (telephone number, address and email)

Who information is processed about

We process information about:

  • The requester of the library service(s)
  • Performance information derived from anonymised data for monitoring purposes

Who information may be shared with

Children's Services Database used by Employment and Skills team to input libraries data for an European Social Fund (ESF) Funded project - Fab Lab.

How long we will keep your information

Business need or maximum of 7+ years after service delivery.
