Family history courses for beginners
Courses will start in January 2020.
First steps in family history
A 7-week course for complete beginners, explaining the process of researching your family tree from scratch, how to organise your files and information, and how to find and use essential records such as birth, marriage and death indexes, certificates, and census records.
You will learn how to use the Ancestry and Find My Past websites effectively, and how to access records in archives and libraries that haven’t yet been made available online.
The 5th week of the course is a non-teaching session but the tutor will still be on hand to help you make progress with your own research.

Intermediate/advanced family history courses
Next steps in family history
A 7-week course for people who have traced their family history tree back to the early 1800s and are familiar with birth, marriage and death records and censuses.
This intermediate level course looks at records such as church baptisms, marriages and burials, school and occupation records, census substitutes (before 1841 and after 1911), wills and probate, newspapers, and using local history sources to broaden your research into community history.
The 4th week of the course is a non-teaching session but the tutor will still be on hand to help you with your own research.

Further Steps in Family History
This 7-session course will take place fortnightly so that you have chance in between lessons to do your own research.
This intermediate course will help if you have traced your family back to at least the early 1800s in England & Wales and will cover topics such as workhouses, military records, migration, crime, land and property, and what to do when records run out.
