Traffic Sensitive Streets

Under the Traffic Management Act 2004 and the Street Works (Registers, Notices, Directions and Designations) (England) Regulations 2007, the Council can declare roads as being "traffic sensitive streets”.

In designating a street as traffic sensitive we are highlighting those sections of the highway within the borough where roadworks are likely to create unacceptable delays and disruption to road users at key times of the day.

A ‘traffic sensitive’ designation does not necessarily prevent roadworks from taking place, but does give the Authority greater control over when and for how long the works take place. The restrictions can apply to the carriageway only or to a footway or pedestrian area only, and can be specific to certain days, or times of day.

The criteria for considering which roads can be designated as ‘traffic sensitive’ are set out in national regulations.

Between August and October 2017 the Authority carried out a review of the Highway network and the routes that we had previously declared as Traffic Sensitive. The purpose of this review was to ensure that the list of routes remained relevant and up to date.

Following this review, key works promoters were invited to comment on the review prior to the new updated list of routes being published.

This consultation process has now finished, and consequently the current list of each road which has been designated, with details of the designation, time periods and criteria used for designation is available below:
