Keeping yourself safe

Here are some simple ways to help you stay safe and reduce the risk of abuse or neglect.

Stay connected

Stay connected with friends, family and neighbours. The more people you’re in contact with, the stronger your support network will be.

Don’t hesitate to speak up

If you’re being harmed or neglected, speak to us, tell your GP or another professional you trust.

You can contact us by:

  • phone: 0121 704 8007 (Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, except Wednesdays when we open at 10:00am)
  • email: ccadults@solihull.gov.uk

If you need urgent support during out-of-hours, please call 0121 605 6060.

Always keep control of your money

Always keep control of your money and be cautious if someone you don't know or trust offers to help manage your finances.

Always ask for references

Always ask for references when hiring a care worker and ensure they have had a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Remember you have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter where you live or receive care, whether it’s in your home, a care home or a hospital.

If you feel unsafe at home

If you feel threatened or unsafe where you live, talk to your care provider, your family, or contact us using the details above.

If you're experiencing domestic violence or abuse, there are support services available.

Fire safety in the home

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) works with partners to help protect vulnerable people to reduce fire risks and improve health, safety and wellbeing. Partners often have unique access to individuals who may not otherwise reach out for help.

WMFS provides a Safe and Well check for those in our communities who have high risk and vulnerability to fire. This may include people who:

  • have mobility issues
  • have a physical disability or mental health condition
  • live in an area of deprivation
  • have hoarding disorder
  • are alcohol or substance-dependent

More information on the types of Safe and Well checks available and what they include can be found on the WMFS website.

Guidance for professionals and carers

WMFS has created Fire Safety Guidance for Professionals and Carers for people who work to support or care for people who have high risk and vulnerability to fire.

There is lots of useful information and resources available that can help professionals and carers identify risk and vulnerabilities, along with guidance on how to refer someone for a Safe and Well check.

For further information and support, you can email WMFS at prevention.queries@wmfs.net
