Sheltered housing

There are three types of sheltered housing available including:

  • rental properties
  • owner-occupied properties
  • low-cost home ownership

What does sheltered housing provide?

Sheltered housing is a form of self-contained accommodation that usually has:

  • a housing manager or warden who lives on- or offsite
  • a 24-hour emergency alarm
  • communal spaces such as a lounge and garden
  • communal facilities such as a laundry room
  • a social events calendar
  • links to the local community including nearby public transport and amenities

Most of the sheltered housing schemes in Solihull have between 20 and 40 self-contained apartments or bungalows.

How to find sheltered housing

You can find sheltered housing providers using the Solihull Directory.

How much does sheltered housing cost?

The cost of sheltered housing can vary depending on the accommodation you choose.

The amount you have to pay towards the cost of your care will depend on the outcome of your financial assessment. Our arranging and paying for care page provides further information.

You will also be required to pay rent and other property-related costs such as utilities. The amount you pay for this will depend on your financial situation.
