New parking and loading restrictions will be introduced to Manor Square in Solihull town centre at the end of June.
Vehicles will be prohibited from waiting and parking in Manor Square - the area outside the Council House and next to Touchwood shopping centre - at any time. Loading and unloading will also be restricted to outside the hours of 7am and 7pm, Monday to Sunday.
Visitors will see new road markings and signs detailing these changes being installed next week, with the restrictions coming into force on Friday 27 June 2025.
Manor Square is commonly used as a drop off and collection point due to its proximity to both Touchwood and the high street, as well as a popular parking spot for Blue Badge holders. This has led to increased congestion, posing a safety risk to vulnerable pedestrians as a result of motorists often carrying out dangerous reversing manoeuvres and parking on pavements.
The changes will improve safety for road users. They will also increase visibility and ensure that access is always maintained to the properties and businesses off Manor Square. It will also mean better access for emergency service vehicles needing to navigate the area.
As an alternative, motorists can use any Council managed car park free of charge for up to 10 minutes for any drop offs and collections they may need to make. The barrier to the Council House car park will also continue to be lifted at 5.30pm on weekdays, giving people another alternative, free of charge drop off location after this time.
Once the restrictions come into effect, the three dedicated Blue Badge parking spaces available in Manor Square will be more easily accessible. Alternatively, any of the Council managed pay and display town centre carparks can also be used free of charge by those displaying their blue badge (including the Council House car park after 5.30pm, Monday to Friday).
Councillor Ken Hawkins, Solihull Council's cabinet member for Environment and Infrastructure, said:
“Over the years, Manor Square has unfortunately become a highly congested area, which is often gridlocked due to there not being the appropriate space for vehicles to enter and turn around to exit.
“We have seen an increase in inconsiderate parking, with the existing disabled parking bays frequently being blocked and motorists generally driving in an erratic and dangerous way.
“We are confident that the new restrictions will bring many benefits, number one being the increased safety for pedestrians, particularly those who are vulnerable.
“Fewer cars will enhance the overall experience for visitors, not only improving safety but also air quality as a result of lower vehicle emissions.”
