Unleashing Potential through Work Experience

Animal lovers Jessie and Harry have explored 12 different animal-related career paths from pet sitting to veterinary – thanks to Solihull Council’s Youth Trailblazer programme.

Run by the Council’s Employment and Skills Team, the programme supports young people aged 18-21 who are out of work to gain hands-on experience and explore careers through work placements. Jessie and Harry had a three-week placement with the Snooty Pooch CIC, a community organisation that improves local mental health and wellbeing through therapy dog services and community events.

Like many young people, Jessie and Harry had experienced some setbacks and had been out of work for some time before joining the programme. This placement opened their eyes to the range of opportunities in the industry, while developing essential life skills such as traveling independently. Last week, they completed their placement with a dog-grooming taster session, giving therapy dogs including Rufus (pictured) a well-deserved pampering. Alice Cassel, owner of the Pet Palace in Shard End offered this taster session with her team.

Harry shared: “I didn’t want anything to do with schools or colleges. I was looking for a job but hadn’t been successful. I love dogs, so I was thrilled to learn about this opportunity with Snooty Pooch. I’ve never had so much fun at work. I’ve learnt how to train and handle dogs, as well as all the many different roles involved in working with animals.”

Jessie agreed: “I’m surprised by the variety of roles we’ve discovered. I’m not sure what I want to do next, but I’m sure everything we’ve done will help. I’ve been asked to stay on as a peer mentor for the next cohort. I’ve become a lot more confident and I get out of the house more. Walking the dog was a great exercise!”

Sarah-Amie Treanor, owner of the Snooty Pooch CIC, said:“As a community-based organisation, we want to be part of the solution to tackle youth unemployment. Every young person has potential, and when given the right opportunity and support, they absolutely rise to it. I’d encourage employers to get involved. The programme provides support at every step, so you’re never on your own. By opening your doors, you’re not just helping one young person — you’re investing in the community. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see them grow.”

Cllr Heather Delaney, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Skills, said: “I enjoyed today as much as Harry and Jessie did. I was surprised to learn that this was just one of the many taster sessions they’ve taken part in. It shows the wide range of roles young people can explore through our programme. We work with community organisations and employers from many different sectors in the borough, so there’s something for everyone. We’ve just been commissioned for another year of delivery. Many more opportunities are coming up. I encourage young people and businesses to get in touch with our Employment and Skills Team to get involved.”
