Blue hearts light up gate for mental health awareness week

Released:

The gates at Malvern Park have been covered with heartfelt messages for people struggling with their mental health, to mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2025.

The messages have been written on blue hearts by members of a men’s walking and talking group, members of the council and others.

The Mayor of Solihull and the Deputy Leader of Solihull Council attended an event last week to unveil the messages.

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Shahin Ashraf MBE, said: “It was an honour to attend last Tuesday’s event, in my final full week as Mayor.

“Whether it’s with family, friends, or colleagues, speaking to people about how we’re feeling is so important.

“The men’s walking and talking group is a fantastic initiative that provides a safe space for attendees to discuss any problems they may be having with their mental health.”

The event was organised in partnership between Solihull Council and the Solihull Men Walking and Talking group, which has been meeting twice a week since October.

Danny Smith, group founder, said: “When I started the group, I didn’t realise so many others had similar experiences to me, and were so keen to help themselves and others.

“In just seven months, the group has supported hundreds of people.

“Our aim is to change people’s lives for the better, one walk at a time.”

Cllr Karen Grinsell, Deputy Leader of Solihull Council, added: “The theme of mental health awareness week this year is community, and Solihull Men Walking and Talking is a really fantastic example of the many community groups across the borough who provide support and help for anyone who needs it.

“Getting out in the fresh air and walking through one of our beautiful parks, talking to other members of the group, can only be a good thing.

“Reading the supportive messages on the blue hearts confirmed to me how generous and supportive of each other Silhilians are.”
